Cherbourg is located in Normandy, southwest France, north of the Cotentin Peninsula. A naval base and seaport, Cherbourg's industries include coal, timber, and shipbuilding. The harbor opens onto a wide bay sheltered naturally on three sides, making it an ideal centre for water sports and large nautical events.
In 2002, Cherbourg unveiled a major new attraction, La Cité de la Mer, combining a large aquarium with a nuclear submarine. The Basilique de la Trinité and the former town beach, now grassed over to form the "Plage Vert" are worth a walk. Over to the south, you could alternatively climb up to Roule Fort for a view of the whole port. The fort itself contains a Musée de la Libération.
