Unga Island, Shumagin Islands

Unga Island is the largest of the Shumagin Islands off the Alaska Peninsula in southwestern Alaska, USA. The island is uninhabited but is a popular day trip destination where you can find a rare petrified forest, one of the largest abandoned villages in the Aleutians, or the relics of gold mines.

Unga island can be accessed by boat from nearby Popof island, where the largest community in the area is located at Sand Point, on the northwest coast. Sand Point is a beautiful location which is popular with hikers due to its lack of bears. Birdwatching is also a favourite pastime, with the island being home to a spectacular population of bird life including eagles, puffins, cormorants and kittiwakes.
