  1. Port Overview

  1. Long Island Sound. New York, USA

  2. Long Island Sound is an estuary of the Atlantic Ocean, located in the United States between Connecticut to the north and Long Island, New York to the south. The mouth of the Connecticut River at Old Saybrook, Connecticut, empties into the sound.

Several major cities are situated along Long Island Sound and more than 8 million people live within its watershed. Major Connecticut cities on the Sound include Bridgeport, New London, Stamford, Norwalk, and New Haven. Cities on the New York side of the Sound include Rye, Glen Cove, New Rochelle, and portions of New York City (the boroughs of Queens and the Bronx).

Thirty minutes to the west by car or rail lies Manhattan with its theaters, restaurants, museums and sports attractions. In stark contrast to the hustling glamour of the city are Long Island's Nassau and Suffolk counties, with tree-lined suburban villages, beaches, farms and vineyards. The hilly North Shore offers lush foliage, small towns with a New England feeling and the inlets and coves of the North Fork. The sandy expanses of the South Shore feature some of the finest beaches on the Eastern Seaboard. World-renowned Jones Beach is less than 30 minutes by car and within two hours are the Hamptons beaches and the National Seashore at Fire Island. Montauk Point, the eastern tip of Long Island's South Fork, is famous for its deep-sea fishing.
