  1. Port Overview

  1. Coburg Island, Canada

  2. Coburg Island is an uninhabited island in Qikiqtaaluk, Nunavut, Canada. The island is characterized by cliffs, rocky shores, and tundra. Bowhead whale, narwhal, polar bear, seal, walrus, and white whale frequent the area.

Coburg Island has several designated conservation classifications including International Biological Program site and Key Migratory Bird Terrestrial Habitat site. Along with the surrounding marine area, the island is a part of the Nirjutiqavvik National Wildlife Area. An estimated 30,000 pairs of Black-legged Kittiwakes crowd the rocky ledges along with 160,000 pairs of Thick-billed Murres. Most of the murre chicks have already fledged: we see them diving and feeding in the rich waters along the shore, taking advantage of the summer bonanza.
