  2. The Snæfellsnes peninsula is situated to the west of Borgarfjörður in the west of Iceland. The Snæfellsjökull volcano is found here. With its height of 1446m, it is the highest mountain on the peninsula and has a glacier called the (jökull) at its peak. The volcano can be seen on clear days from Reykjavík, a distance of about 120 km away. The mountain is also known as the setting of the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth by the French author Jules Verne.

    The area surrounding Snæfellsjökull has been designated a national park by the government of Iceland. Local fishing villages and small towns on the northern shore of Snæfellsnes include Rif, Ólafsvík, Grundarfjörður, Stykkishólmur and Búðardalur.

    Port Location – The port is located in Olavsvik harbor, which is the largest town on Snæfellsnes peninsula.

    Transport Links – The Snæfellsnes peninsula can be accessed by bus and boat. There are no scheduled flights to West Iceland, the nearest airport is in Reykjavik.

    From the Bus Central (BSI) in Reykjavik there are regular bus services to Borgarnes,Snaefellsnes peninsula and the north of Iceland several times a day.

    The car and passenger ferry, Baldur operates from Stykkisholmur with a stop-over on Flatey island on the way to Brjanslaekur in the West fjords.
