  2. Pentecost Island is one of the 83 islands in the Vanuatu groups, lying 190km’s due north of the capital Port Vila. It is a lush, mountainous island which stretches North to South over some 60km.

    Pentecost is well known for its land-diving (Naghol) which is one of the most spectacular and impressive rituals in the whole of the Pacific. It takes place when the yams are ripe for the picking, in April/May, also the time of the year when the vines reach their maximum strength.

    Sand drawing is another interesting custom of the island. Symbolic figures are drawn in the sand in one complete movement, without lifting a finger.

    Travel Links – Pentecost has two airfields, at Lonorore in the south-west and Sara in the north, at which small planes land three or four times a week. Cargo ships travelling between Port Vila and Luganville ply the island's west coast, although few ships visit the east coast, where sea conditions are rough and the population is sparse.
