Starbuck Island, Republic of Kiribati

Starbuck Island, also known as Volunteer Island, is an uninhabited coral atoll in the central Pacific Ocean, part of the Central Line Islands belonging to Kiribati. It is a low, flat coral island, with a greatest height, along the beach crest, of about 15 feet. Within this crest the island is depressed, with small salt lagoons near the eastern end.

There is no fresh water on the island, and little vegetation exists. The island boasts a large colony of sooty terns, estimated at 1.5 million pairs, together with Polynesian rats, feral cats, green turtles, and around fifteen other species of seabirds.

Transport Links – The most convenient way to get to Kiribati is mainly by air with scheduled air services provided by Air Nauru and Air Pacific. Air Nauru operates four times a week to Tarawa while Air Pacific operates from Nadi (Fiji) connecting Christmas Island.
