The old town is clustered along the main street, flanked with houses and shops built from local stone, with narrow lanes and alleys branching off it. The hill of Brinkies Brae shelters the captivating town with its jumble of seagull-strewn slate roofs.

    Transport Links – The main airport in Orkney is Kirkwall Airport provides services to the Scottish Mainland and to Sumburgh Airport in Shetland. Ferries serve both to link Orkney to the rest of Scotland, and also to link together the various islands of the Orkney archipelago. Regular buses link Stromness with Kirkwall via the neolithic sights at Stenness. Other buses go to Birsay, passing close to Skara Brae.

    Getting around Stromness is easy as it is a compact town and a walk along the main street is very pleasant.
