Milazzo, (Sicily) Italy

Milazzo is a town of on the north coast of Sicily, Italy. It lies 50 km from Messina, just north of the road to Palermo. It is located on a peninsula called Capo di Milazzo. Milazzo was known as Mylae by the ancient Greeks, who settled there around 700 BC. The city’s interesting history dates from Sicily’s Ausonian period of the late Bronze Age and much of the town's early history parallels that of the Eolian Islands.

The most interesting historical monuments are the Arabic-Norman Castle, the Cathedral of the XVII century, the Sanctuary of St. Francesco from Paola built in 1465 and restored in the XVIII century. There are also numerous noble buildings in the lower part of the town like the Carrozza Palace and the neoclassic Town Building.

Port Location –The port of Milazzo is lcoated a short distance from the town centre.

Travel Links – Frequent trains run from Palermo, Cefalu and Messina - from where you can connect to Taormina, Catania, Naples and Rome. The train station is about 3km South of the centre - buses run to the centre frequently and there are taxis.
Frequent buses run from Messina to the town centre of Milazzo and stop right by the passenger ferry port.
The are frequent car ferries and much quicker hydrofoils from and to the Aeolian Islands (most go to Vulcano and Lipari) - lots in Summer, with fewer during Spring, Autumn and Winter and on Sundays A few car ferries a week also continue on to Naples.
