Baucau, East Timor

Baucau is the second-largest city in East Timor, situated 122 km east of the capital, Dili. Baucau is surrounded by lush forest and is the perfect location for expansive views of the glorious coastline and Savu Sea.

Much of the infrastructure of the city and the surrounding area was damaged or destroyed during the riots that followed the referendum for independence in 1999. Nevertheless, in the old part of Baucau there survive a few relics from the Portuguese colonial era, such as large colonial houses, churches, and public buildings. One of these is the Pousada de Baucau, a large pink hotel whose restaurant offers a magnificent view of the ocean.

Travel Links – Baucau is accessible by air. Baucau’s Cakung Airport is six kilometers from the city. Lobato International Airport is located in Dili.

All long distance buses leave from Kota Baru, just beside the roundabout near the market. There are buses to Dili, Los Palos, Viqueque on the south coast, as well as many of the small villages around Baucau.
