  2. Ashmore Reef is a small low-lying uninhabited tropical island in the Indian Ocean. It is situated on the edge of the continental shelf north-west of Australia and south of the Indonesian Island of Roti. It is made up of West, Middle and East Islets. In 1983 it was established as a national nature reserve.

    The Reserve comprises several marine habitats and supports an important and diverse range of species, including sea snakes, a population of Dugong and feeding and nesting sites for Loggerhead, Hawksbill, and Green Turtles, as well as 50,000 breeding pairs of various kinds of seabirds.
