Skyros, Greece

Skyros Island is the fourth and largest island in the Northern Sporades Island group which consists of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnissos and Skyros. The main village (or Chorio) climbs up the slopes of a steep hill rising straight up from the sea and culminating in a castle (Kastro) at the top. This is an impressive, naturally fortified rock which gave Skyros an important strategic position in the Northern Aegean.

Skyros town has retained it's centuries old character with cobbled streets, stone-paved courtyards, and steps leading tiny well kept houses. The views from the Kastro (and the monastery of Aghios Georgios just below it) are absolutely stunning and it is well worth climbing up to it through the beautiful, winding, cobbled streets of the village.

Visitors to Skyros will find beautiful sandy beaches and picturesque hidden coves with crystalline waters. Some offer various rentals and sea sports activities but the majority retain their natural beauty. There are all the usual shops you will find in any Greek town or village, plus tavernas, cafes, bars and tourist shops. Skyros has long been noted for its arts and crafts, beautiful and much sought-after pottery and elaborately carved furniture that can be found in almost every Skyriot house.

Port Location - The port is located at Linaria which is 10 km’s from the main town on Skyros.

Travel Links - You can either fly to Skiathos and take the ferryboat from to Skyros. Another option is to fly to Athens, and then go to Ag, Konstantinos or Kimi on Evia, where there are ferries to Skyros.

There is a local bus and a few taxis, but the best way to get around is to rent a vehicle. Little excursion boats can also take you to some of the beaches.
