  1. Port Overview

  1. Le Palais, France

  2. Le Palais is the port and main town of the island of Belle-Île, a French island off the coast of Brittany in the département of Morbihan, and the largest of Brittany's islands. It is 14km, or 45 minutes, by ferry from the Quiberon.

Docking at Le Palais, the abrupt star-shaped fortifications of the citadelle are the first thing you see. It is startling in size; filled with doorways leading to mysterious cellars and underground passages, endless sequences of rooms, dungeons and deserted cells.

Near the west end of the island is the Grotte de l'Apothicairerie, and inland, towards Le Palais, you pass the two menhirs. Belle-Île's second town, Sauzon, is a beautiful little village built along one side of a long estuary, 6km west of Le Palais. Further on from Sauzon is the old village of Bangor. Locamaria is an ideal rest spot to stop and view the wild beauty of the area.
