  2. The Catskills of New York are a "dissected plateau", a highland worn into mountains and valleys by erosion. Largely rural and wild, the Catskills are a popular vacation destination for New Yorkers.

    The major attraction of the Catskill region is the spectacular unspoiled scenery. There are ninety-eight peaks more than 3,000 feet high and covering more than 4,000 square miles, five major rivers, the Mohonk Preserve, Catskill Park, wild forests, crystal lakes and fertile valleys.

    Visitors can choose to travel the region by boat or motorcyle, by rail or mountain bike, kayak or glider, on snowmobile, golfcart or horseback. By foot you can snowshoe, hike, ski, climb mountains or ice. Birdwatching, fly-fishing, canoeing, swimming, shopping, tubing or skydiving are also available

    Amtrak rail service is available from Penn Station in New York City with numerous stops along the Hudson River with connecting bridge crossings to the Catskill Region.

    There is the Metro-North’s Hudson rail Line from Grand Central Station in New York City serves Poughkeepsie, across the Hudson River from Highland.
