  1. Port Overview

  1. Nisyros, Greece

  2. Nissiros (Nisyros) is a volcanic Greek island and municipality located in the Aegean Sea. It is part of the Dodecanese group of islands, situated between the islands of Kos and Tilos. Its shape is approximately round, with a diameter of about 8 km, and an area of 41.6 km² . Several other islets are found in the direct vicinity of Nisyros, the largest of which is Gyali. The Municipality of Nisyros includes Gyalí) as well as uninhabited Pacheiá, Pergoússa, Kandelioússa, Ágios Antónios, and Stroggýli.

Nissiros is quite well known for its triple-crater volcano, still venting and hissing and spewing smelly sulfur. Visitors to the island can take a tour from the capital Mandraki to visit the crater floor. The island’s coastline is only 28 kilometers long, and while its beaches are not its main feature, there are some really nice ones that require either a long walk or a short ride by motorbike.

The port and capital of the island is called Mandraki, situated on the northwest coast of the island. It’s a very pretty little town, with houses packed densely together and tiny alleyways leading here and there. Within the town are many tavernas and small bars. Attractions in Mandraki include the beautiful monastery of Panagia Spiliani, dating to 1600 and nearby Paleokastro, an interesting fortress dating to the 7th century.
