Ammassalik (Tasiilaq), Greenland

Ammassalik is a remote island off the east coast of Greenland, just south of the Arctic Circle. It is separated from the mainland of Greenland by the wide Sermilik Fjord. Ammassalik is exceptionally beautiful boasting steep, dramatic mountains, countless lakes, streams and rivers, waterfalls, glaciers and green valleys.

The only settlement on the island is Tasiilaq town,the most populous community on the eastern coast, and the seventh-largest town in Greenland.

Being just south of the Polar Circle, you’ll find the climate in Ammassalik surprisingly comfortable. Summers are generally warm and dry. Winters are relatively mild with lots of snow. Summer days are long with just a few hours of dusk. Winter days are short, and the perfect time for experiencing the Northern Lights.

Port Location – The port is located in a natural harbour in Tasiilaq Fjord at the town of Tasiilaq.

Travel Links – Air Greenland operates helicopter services from Tasiilaq Heliport to neighboring Kulusuk Airport, which offers connections to Nuuk, Ittoqqortoormiit via Nerlerit Inaat Airport, and to Iceland. The heliport serves as a local helicopter hub with flights to several villages in the region: Isortoq, Kuummiit, Sermiligaaq, and Tiniteqilaaq.

In the summer, the cargo boats of Royal Arctic Line connect Tasiilaq with Kulusuk, providing an ad-hoc alternative for the helicopter flights of Air Greenland.
