Sangatta River, Kalimantan

The town of Sangatta and Sangatta River are located in East Kalimantan, Borneo. Both serve as entry points to the Kutai National Park. The park is located north of the Mahakam river and includes several lakes: Danau Maau, Santan, Besar and Sirapan. It is adjacent to the towns of Bontang and Sangatta and 120 km north of the provincial capital Samarinda.

Visitors can take a cruise upstream on the Sangatta River into the rainforest of the National Park. Highlights include the Prevab Orang Utan research station and trekking into the lowland rainforest to look for Orangutans and the long nose Proboscis Monkey. Visitors will also discover the mangrove forest of the Sangatta River.
