  2. Sumba is an island in eastern Indonesia, is one of the Lesser Sunda Islands, and is in the province of East Nusa Tenggara. Waingapu is the largest city and the main gateway to the island. Sumba boasts stunning beaches, a unique culture and distinctive flora and fauna.

    Sumba has very little infrastructure for tourism, however popular attractions include the neolithic/bronze age parctice of burial in stone megaliths, which can be widely seen across the island. Another unique attractions in Sumba are pasolas; ritual horseback jousting trials held annually in February or March (or both).

    Travel Links - Regional carrier Merpati Nusantara Airlines operates direct flights to Waingapu from many several cities in eastern Indonesia, with less frequent flights also offered by Batavia Air and Pelita Air Services.

    The Pelni passenger ship Awu calls in at Waingapu twice on its 14 day round trip of Nusa Tenggara. This allows access from Kupang and several other cities in the region. The Awu is by far the safest and best way to reach Sumba by sea.
