  1. Port Overview

  1. Governor's Harbour, Bahamas

  2. Governor's Harbour is located on Eleuthera Island which is one of several within the archipelago of islands known as The Bahamas. Eleuthera Island is 50 miles (80 km) east of Nassau. It is long and thin — 110 miles (180 km) long and in places little more than 1 mile (1,600 m) wide.

Governor's Harbour is the principal settlement; has the largest of the 3 airports on the island and is therefore the administrative capital of Eleuthera Island. The island was quite prosperous in from the 1950's and into the 1980's, attracting several prominent American industrialists and business tycoons who established exclusive and private resorts. It is still frequently visited by the rich and famous, particular film stars, as it is one of the rare destinations where they can stay with some anonymity.

The land around Governor's Harbour varies from wide rolling pink sand beaches to large outcrops of ancient coral reefs. It is on the western side of Eleuthera Island and faces the Great Bahama Bank. It is surrounded by shallow seas. The island is particularly noted for the excellence of its pineapples and holds an annual Pineapple Festival.

Cruises to the Bahamas are generally 3, 4 or 5 day escapes from the east coast cities of the US and they travel year round. The region is serviced by many of the major cruise lines which now dedicate ships to this market.

7 day cruises combine the Bahama’s and Bermuda.

The trade winds that blow almost continually throughout The Islands of The Bahamas give the islands a warm, agreeable climate which varies little year round. The most refreshing time is between September through May, when the temperature averages 70-75F degrees. The rest of the year is a bit warmer with temperatures between 80-85F degrees. Sea surface temperatures vary between 74 degrees in February and 84 degrees in August.
