Jamaica

Jamaica, the third largest island in the West Indies, is in the Caribbean, south of Cuba and west of Hispaniola. The island is the top of a submerged mountain range. The land is mostly plateau with the Blue Mountains, up to 7,402 feet high, rising in the south. The climate is tropical. May and October are the rainiest months but showers are likely any time.

Tourism is Jamaica's main source of revenue but the island is a major bauxite producer. Columbus landed there in 1494 and remarked on the lush vegetation, still unsurpassed in the Caribbean. The island passed from Spain to England in 1655 and attained its independence in 1962. The capital is Kingston in the southwest.

Jamaica's main business is entertaining tourists and it does the job well. Resorts, mountain waterfalls and idyllic beaches await the visitor. While sunbathing, swimming, scuba diving and fishing in the Caribbean are the main attractions, the spicy local cuisine and the island's musical scene, centered on the native Reggae and Calypso, have their devotees too.
