  2. Gijón is located in the Asturias region of Spain. It began as a fishing village nearly 3,000 years ago and today is an important port on the Atlantic coast of Spain.

    The main tourist attraction of the city is the historic fishing village known as Cimadevilla. The village is located on a peninsula that divides the port in half.

    Most of the streets are cobblestone and barely two cars wide. Many of the buildings have been renovated to display the colorful life of the village.
    Other attractions include 16 large sculptures placed in public spaces throughout the city, Cerro de Santa Catalina park and Playa de San Lorenzo, the main beach of the city.

    Port Location – The port is located at El Musel.

    Transport Links- The A-66 motorway (Ruta de La Plata), A-8 (Autopista del Cantábrico) and the AS-1 (Autovía Minera) are the main highway accesses. By train, Gijón has daily service to Madrid, La Coruña, Santander, and Barcelona. Cruise ships call at El Musel, and the Airport of Asturias is located in the not far away municipality of Castrillón with daily flights to major Spanish and European cities.

    A subway system, called Metrotren, is currently under construction to improve the public transport in Gijón. There are 22 regular bus routes in Gijon.
