Monemvasia, Greece

Monemvassia is a medieval fortress with an adjacent town, located on a small peninsula off the east coast of the Peloponnese in the Greek prefecture of Laconia. Monemvassia's nickname is the Gibraltar of the East or The Rock. The rock is 300 m tall and 1.8 km longThe rock on which it is built, 300m. high, is connected to the coast by means of a low bridge.

Nea Monemvasia, the new city across from the fortress-town, is modern and full of vitality year-round, offering all tourist facilities by the seaside.

Travel Links – Access is by land, by following the Sparta-Molaoi road to the south-east, or by ship linking Athens with the South Peloponnese, Kythira and Kasteli. Access is also available or flying dolphin, or by private yacht, since the harbour is one of the safest. Monemvasia is 95km from Sparta.
